The Gulls were 2-0 up after just 17 minutes through Eunan O'Kane and Chris Zebroski, but missed a host of chances to extend their lead and were hanging on at the end after Danny Shelley pulled one back early in the second half.
Buckle said: "That's probably the best 45 minutes of football I've seen at Plainmoor, in the first half it was excellent.
"We got two goals for our troubles again, although if we are going to take this a notch further we have to put away our chances. We had several chances to get the third or even fourth goal and couldn't get them.
"At half-time 2-0 is a precarious scoreline to go in with and I had to sit down in the office for five minutes and work out what I was going to say to the players.
"It's difficult when you've played that well but it's only 2-0 and the opposition are still in it. Crewe are a very good side and their away form is very good, so I am proud of the way we saw the game out."
