Southend defender Sean Clohessy is available again after serving a one-match ban.Striker Scott Spencer has recovered from a back problem but defender Mark Phillips (hamstring) is a doubt.
Torquay boss Paul Buckle has no new injury problems and will have a fully fit squad to choose from.
Midfielder Wayne Carlisle should be included after being rested during the Johnstone's Paint Trophy win against Bournemouth in midweek.
Southend boss Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "The more games that they play together they get to know each other much better.
"I think Josh [Simpson] and Sean [Clohessey] have got an understanding down the right-hand side and the two centre-backs seem to have an understanding.
"The two front men, who seem to suffer most of all the players because of the work they've had to put in, look the weariest of all the squad, so I'll have to monitor that and think if I have to refresh that or not."
Torquay United manager Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon: "The desire to keep the ball out the back of the net goes right the way through the team.
"We work very hard from the front if the opposition do manage to get the ball over the half-way line, and (goalkeeper) Scott Bevan's in fine form as well.
"We know we can score goals, we're a very dangerous team with the ball, and I want us to remain resilient without it."
