A look at Our New Signings for the Coming Season

Although United started late in pre-season, they certainly haven't stopped signing new players since they started with ten new signings. Eight new signings and two old faces.

Here we take a look at the new players, where they are from and where they play.

James Bittner - Goalkeeper

Signed as cover for Andy Marriott, he has shown during pre-season that he is a capable goalkeeper, even though he conceded a few against Charlton, most of his games have been during the second half of games when Torquay have sent out a more experimental side.

Only experience so far comes from a spell spent playing for non-league local minnows Exeter City.

Liam Coleman - Midfield

Signs from Colchester United where he has yet to gain any league experience. Expect that to change this season. He plays in the hole behind the front two, linking the strikers and the midfield. Although he may start the season coming off the bench, expect him to be starting regularly by the end of the season.

Alan Connell - Striker

Joins for a small fee from AFC Bournemouth where he spent a spell injured last season before struggling to get his place back in the side. Has shown that he is capable of scoring goals for United and links up well with Leon Constantine.

Darren Garner - Midfield

Spent a spell on loan at Plainmoor last season before impressing both management and fans with his performances over the last nine games of the season. Signs from Rotherham and is more than capable of holding his own in this league - possible player of the year.

Matt Hewlett - Midfield

Playmaker who joined from Swindon Town and is expected to fill the boots of former hero Alex Russell who moved to Bristol City in the summer. The midfield partnership with Garner could be the cornerstone on which Uniteds promotion campaign is to be built.

Alex Lawless - Defender

The most impressive of the new signings who looks to have cemented the position of right back following his siging from Fulham. Has played for the Welsh U19 international side and could well be Torquay's next big sale. Expect a fee of £250,000 inside the next two seasons.

Morike Sako - Utility

At 6'7" he has the height to command the back or lead the line but Sako has excellent ball control and skills to run the midfield as he showed against Nottingham Forest in pre-season where he also scored a goal.

James Sharp - Defender

A tough looking left back who is strong in the tackle and could free Brain McGlinchley to move into the wide left midfield spot. Signs from Falkirk and expect him to start off on the bench before replacing McGlinchley before the end of the season.

Mamadou Sow - Striker

With clearance coming through today for eligibility to play in the seasons opener expect Sow to start on the bench. Has formed a good partnership with fellow Frenchman Sako and will be one to watch for his six month trial period.

Matt Villis - Defender

Signed from Plymouth Argyle he spent a year long loan at Plainmoor last season playing as back up for Woods and Taylor when they were either injured or suspended. Kept his place on occasions when his more experienced team mates returned, so expect him to claim one of the central defenders spots should Woods or Taylor fall out of form.

These ten players have given United fans plenty to expect for the coming season, with plenty of strength in depth for each position. Although automatic promotion may be a step too far, do not right off our play-off chances.
