Loss of Russell tempered by Securing New Deals
Torquay United today announced that two Devon born players had extended their contracts with the club.Martin Phillips and Darren Garner, born in Exeter and Plymouth respectively, have signed up to spearhead United's return to League One status at the first attempt.
Phillips joined United at the beginning of last season amid great optimism, unfortunately he failed to impress until the end of the season where he was instrumental in the Gulls four match unbeaten run which gave United a great chance of avoiding the drop. He has signed a two year contract. Let's hope that he doesn't wait until the end of this contract before he starts to impress again.
Garner joined on loan towards the tail end of the relegation season, playing in nine games and seemingly the missing link alongside Alex Russell. With Russell leaving this will mean Garner is given more responsibility, which he should be up to. He has signed a one year contract.
The one we are all waiting for is the news that Adebayo Akinfenwa has signed his contract, repaying the faith that United showed in him. Signing him on a one year deal was a mistake in the first place, we should have gone for two years. Come on Bayo, sign for the club that love you!!!
