Sturrock Finally Gets His Man
Former Torquay United frontman David Graham has joined Sheffield Wednesday from Premiership new boys Wigan Athletic.Paul Sturrock had tried to buy Graham from Trquay when he was at Plymouth Argyle in 2003 and has finally got his man after becoming boss of the Owls following a short ill-fated spell at Southampton.
Sheffield Wednesday play Southampton today, and it is expected that Graham will make his debut in this game.
Graham leaves for £250,000 after only a year with Wigan, where he was falling down the pecking order, and even though he was moving back down the leagues he sees this as the right move for him.
Graham said "It was a very difficult decision to leave Wigan. It was such a big thing eventually getting into the Premiership, and I was looking forward to being part of that.
"A few weeks ago Paul Jewell told me that a couple of clubs were interested in taking me on loan, but he said he didn't want me to go anywhere.
"But then Wigan signed Kamara, and the manager says he's trying to get another striker in too, so he's obviously changed his mind.
"He didn't try to force me to leave, but knowing that I wasn't going to play too often, that really made up my mind."
Graham played 30 league games for the Latics, 17 as substitute, and scored just one goal. Most Gulls fans will be quite disappointed with that return from the man who was the catalyst in our promotion season. We will now be hoping he can fulfill the promise he showed at Plainmoor and make it all the way to the top.
